Babar Azam is determined to finally bring a World Cup title back to Pakistan, saying he is pushing himself harder than ever in both fitness and skill to achieve that dream.

Over the last decade, Babar has grown into one of Pakistan’s most reliable run-scorers, amassing 32 international centuries — the fourth-highest tally for the country. Yet, despite coming close, a major ICC trophy has remained out of reach. As captain, he led Pakistan to the 2022 T20 World Cup final, where England defeated them by five wickets.

Pakistan last lifted a World Cup trophy in 2009 under Younis Khan’s leadership.

In a candid chat with former England star Kevin Pietersen on The Switch, Babar discussed different chapters of his career. When asked about his long-term goals, he made it clear that winning an ICC title is at the top of his list.

“We want to win an ICC trophy. We reached the finals of the T20 World Cup and Asia Cup, but we couldn’t finish the job,” he said. “That’s why I’m putting in so much effort — my fitness, my training, everything.”

Babar also reflected on the expectations and pressure that come with being Pakistan’s leading batter.

“I’m human too. Mistakes can happen. What matters is staying focused. I shut out the noise and talk to myself and my coaches,” he explained.

During the conversation, Babar revealed his admiration for AB de Villiers and shared his earliest memories of watching him play.

“Yes, he has always been my favorite,” he said. Pietersen jokingly asked, “So where do I rank? Second or third?”

Babar laughed and replied, “No… sixth.”

He recalled how he used to imitate AB de Villiers' stance as a young boy and spoke about watching him live for the first time during South Africa’s 2007 tour of Pakistan.

“I was a ball picker then. When I saw AB during the Test match, I just froze. It felt unreal — my idol was right there,” he said.

انگلینڈ کے سابق کرکٹر کےون پیٹرسن کے شو دی سوئچ میں گفتگو کے دوران بابر نے اپنے کیرئیر کے مختلف پہلوؤں پر روشنی ڈالی۔ جب ان سے آئندہ پانچ برسوں کے اہداف پوچھے گئے تو انہوں نے صاف کہا کہ ان کی سب سے بڑی خواہش آئی سی سی ٹرافی جیتنا ہے۔

انہوں نے کہا، ’’ہم آئی سی سی کا ٹائٹل جیتنا چاہتے ہیں۔ ہم ٹی ٹوئنٹی ورلڈ کپ اور ایشیا کپ کے فائنل تک پہنچے، لیکن کامیابی نہ مل سکی۔ اسی لیے میں اپنی فٹنس اور تربیت پر بہت زیادہ محنت کر رہا ہوں۔‘‘

بابر نے بطور پاکستان کے اہم ترین بیٹر، دباؤ اور توقعات کے بارے میں بھی بات کی۔

’’آخر میں انسان ہی ہوں۔ غلطیاں ہو جاتی ہیں۔ اصل چیز فوکس ہے۔ میں لوگوں کی باتیں سننا چھوڑ دیتا ہوں اور خود سے اور اپنے کوچز سے بات کرتا ہوں،‘‘ انہوں نے بتایا۔

گفتگو کے دوران بابر نے اپنے پسندیدہ بلے باز اے بی ڈویلیئرز کے بارے میں بھی دلچسپ واقعات شیئر کیے۔

انہوں نے ہنستے ہوئے بتایا، ’’ہاں، وہ ہمیشہ میرے فیورٹ رہے ہیں۔‘‘

پیٹرسن نے مزاحاً پوچھا، ’’تو میں کون سے نمبر پر ہوں؟ دوسرا یا تیسرا؟‘‘

بابر نے مسکرا کر جواب دیا، ’’نہیں… چھٹا۔‘‘
